Andrews North Carolina, and Reliance Tennessee.

Hiwassee River. Surrounded by the Cherokee
National Forest, rafters delight in the calm
waters of this river and many people choose to

Ocoee River Rafting
The Ocoee River flows northwestwardly through
the Appalachian Mountains. This fast flowing
river is called the Toccoa where it flows in
Georgia; however its name changes to the Ocoee
where it reaches the beautiful valley lands of
McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill Tennessee.
Flowing up through Tennessee the Ocoee River
becomes stronger and is known for its phenomenal
whitewater rafting waters. In fact, the Ocoee
River hosted the slalom events during the
Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics that were held
in and around Atlanta.
In Tennessee the river becomes a primary
tributary of the Hiwassee River which it meets
up with in Polk County Tennessee just near the
small town of Benton TN. Here the Ocoee's flow
is controlled by the Tennessee Valley Authority
via three dams. The dams are numbered with #1
located the farthest location downstream and #3
located upstream. All total these dams generate
67,000 kilowatts of hydroelectric power; however
they are most known for creating the fast
flowing middle section of the river where some
20 named rapids are located. During the 8 month
Ocoee River Whitewater Rafting season, rafters
and kayakers from all over the country visit the
river to take on large rapids such as "Hell's
Hole" and "Powerhouse".
