Fishing is one of my favorite pastimes, and North Georgia has some of the best fishing spots and secret hideaways in all of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Southeast. As an avid angler, I have explored just about every creek, pond, lake, and secret fishing spot in North Georgia; here are a few of the best North Georgia Fishing spots.

Scenic Blue Ridge GA lies in a gorgeous valley area where two rivers, the Ellijay River and the Cartecay River join together and form the Coosawattee River. The mighty Coosawattee River runs into Carters Lake, which is the deepest lake in Georgia and a lake known for its grand rock dam, the largest rock dam east of the Mississippi River.

Carters Lake is approximately 11 miles long and offers over 62 miles of beautiful, preserved shoreline. Because of restrictions around the lake, there are no private docks or development along the lake, creating spectacular beauty and a fine place to go Fishing in North Georgia. However, shoreline fishing on Carters Lake is limited due to steep grades and rocky areas that are found around the lake. Boaters have access to six different boat ramps and loading spots and can enjoy peaceful North Georgia Fishing near the lower part of the lake. Near the upper region of the lake, you’ll find the regulation dam and some excellent fast water fishing below the dam on the Coosawattee River. In both the upper and lower portion of the lake, anglers will find a variety of fish species including large and smallmouth bass, stripped bass, crappie, walleye, catfish and bream. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has an active fish stocking program and it regularly stocks native fish in Carters Lake. For those that enjoy camping, hiking and picnicking, the Carters Lake Recreation Area has excellent facilities for these activities and much more!

If you are looking to enjoy the excellent Trout Fishing in North Georgia, be sure to head out to the Mountaintown Creek area in the Cohutta Wilderness Area and Appalachian National Forest. Mountaintown Creek joins the Coosawattee River just before Carter’s Lake and is one of the best places to fish for native and stocked brown and rainbow trout. Some lucky fishermen have caught large, native trout here, and it is not unusual to catch 20-26 inch trout. Offering fishing in many different spots, Mountaintown Creek is a very wide creek, and in many places it is wider than some rivers. The waters are crystal clear and mostly cold throughout the year as it flows from colder water in the small tributaries that flow from the North Georgia Mountains. These deep, cold springs create excellent breeding grounds for trout and many large, trophy sized trout have been caught in its waters.
