The railroad in Blue Ridge Georgia provided a pivotal means of development providing transportation in the mountains for builders and other businesses to conduct business, and connected the city of Murphy North Carolina with that of Blue Ridge Georgia. For one hundred years between 1800 and 1900 the railroad created routes for many local roads, transported mined materials and timber from the area, and greatly contributed to the growth of the small resort mountain towns in North Georgia. It operated under numerous titles during this time, beginning with the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad, then it was renamed the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern, before finally being called the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1905. Freight transport ended in the 1980’s and it was not until 1990 that a group of locals decided to create a
Blue Ridge GA Attraction with the train and begin operating a passenger train service again.
Today, the train route takes riders through some of the most picturesque locations in the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. Beginning at the Blue Ridge Georgia depot, the train takes riders on a 26 mile round trip which includes stops at McCaysville, Murphy Junction, and Copperhill Tennessee. Each round trip lasts about 4 hours and follows along the beautiful Toccoa River. At McCaysville and Copperhill Tennessee riders get to stop and stretch their legs a bit, and explore the area for a few minutes.
In addition to the regular scheduled rail trips, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway operates special rail events like the Santa Express during the holidays, Meet Our Engineer Days during the summer, and fun and adventurous Mild and Wild Whitewater Adventures. Taking a trip on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a great way to enjoy the beauty found in the North Georgia Mountains and see locations that are not accessible by a motor vehicle.
